European Cultural Foundation: Archives Academic and Artistic Research Fellowships (Italy)
Overview
The European Cultural Foundation (ECF) has deposited its historical archives at the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU), housed within the European University Institute in Florence. To activate this material, the ECF has established an annual fellowship intended to generate new scholarly and artistic work that draws substantially on its holdings. The archives are primarily in English, with significant French, German, and Dutch materials, and occasional documents in other languages. Fellows are expected to conduct research on-site at the HAEU, joining an international community of scholars. The fellowship carries no fixed period or residency requirement, allowing fellows to structure their engagement according to the demands of their projects. However, the ECF expects outcomes to be completed and publicly presented or published within two years of the fellowship. This flexibility accommodates both sustained archival research and practice-based inquiries that may unfold across different phases. The curatorial vision centers on the history of the ECF and the broader question of how culture has shaped Europe as a shared space of imagination, cooperation, and solidarity. Projects may take scholarly or artistic forms, provided they engage deeply with the archival record. The fellowship thus supports work that bridges historical research and contemporary cultural reflection, with the archive serving as both source and subject.
