Les Antípodes: Numèric Research and Creation Grant Residency 2026 on Language and AI (Spain)
Overview
Les Antípodes has opened a new edition of its Numèric residency programme, this year organised in collaboration with Bòlit, Centre d'art contemporani, Girona, and Museu de l'Empordà, Figueres. The residency is devoted to 'the word' and to large language models, situating linguistic practice within a broader inquiry into authorship, originality, and creativity now that these systems generate language autonomously, without experience or intention. The programme takes place 2–30 November 2026, coinciding with Les Antípodes' public programme of activities across Agullana and Figueres in Alt Empordà, and Ceret in Vallespir. The residencies run simultaneously and conclude with a public presentation of the work carried out. This structure places the resident's process within a live curatorial and public context rather than an isolated studio period, and the institutional partnership with two contemporary art museums in Girona and Figueres signals a serious engagement with the region's artistic infrastructure. The conceptual framework begins from the word as an instrument and material of creation, present across widely differing cultural traditions, and uses that ground to interrogate the systems behind artificial-intelligence tools such as ChatGPT or Claude. The programme is offered at no fee. It is a research and creation grant residency, meaning the expectation is the development of new work or inquiry rather than the completion of a predetermined project. Practitioners working across disciplines—visual art, writing, performance, film, and adjacent fields—whose practice engages language, text, or the cultural and philosophical dimensions of artificial intelligence will find the framing particularly apposite.
