Sónar+D/Fundación Cotec: Installation in Digital Culture at KNOWCASE (Spain)
Overview
Sónar+D and Fundación Cotec have issued an international open call for an installation to be hosted at KNOWCASE, Cotec's exhibition space in Madrid, beginning in 2027. The commission follows a prior collaboration at Sónar 2026 and extends the institutions' shared inquiry into the intersection of art, technology, and social impact. The call is open to artists, collectives, designers, technologists, universities, research centres, start-ups, businesses, creative agencies, producers, cultural institutions, and multidisciplinary teams—an unusually broad eligibility that reflects the hybrid nature of the work sought. Proposals must be original and never previously exhibited. They should combine knowledge, research, science, and data with art, technology, and social impact, and must include a participative and interactive element that encourages critical thinking and reflection. Crucially, the selected installation must remain viable for exhibition over a minimum period of 24 months, a durational requirement that places as much weight on material resilience and conceptual endurance as on novelty. The curatorial vision is one of sustained public encounter rather than ephemeral spectacle. KNOWCASE functions as a long-term platform, and the jury will be assessing how a proposal holds up under repeated visitation, how it invites participation without sacrificing rigor, and how it frames scientific or data-driven content within an artistic and socially reflexive context. This is a commission for practitioners who think in years, not weeks.
