Writers in Paradise — 2027 Poetry with Didi Jackson and Major Jackson (co-leading)
Overview
Writers in Paradise has convened writers for intensive workshop experiences, and this iteration places poetry at the center under the co-leadership of Didi Jackson and Major Jackson. The workshop will examine the craft elements that allow a poem to make a lasting imprint on the reader, with attention to avoiding familiar phrases, conceits, and tropes in favor of finding the extraordinary in the everyday. The faculty emphasize support, kindness, and respect as the working conditions for revision. The submission process is itself a curatorial act: applicants submit up to seven pages of unpublished poetry, and those pages are read and evaluated for workshop readiness. If accepted, the poems submitted with the application are the poems that will be discussed in the workshop; no new material will be accepted. This structure asks poets to present a coherent body of work that can sustain close collective attention. The workshop is a paid opportunity: the fee is $2,500 USD. The deadline for submissions is November 2, 2026. Writers should prepare a single document of no more than seven pages, with all poems included, formatted in 12-point Times [New Roman] as specified in the guidelines. The focus is on craft, revision, and the shared commitment to making each poem a better version of itself.
