Amaranth — Fall 2026 Reading Period
Overview
Amaranth is the literary magazine of Anne Arundel Community College (AACC), and its reading period is expressly limited to AACC students and alumni. This is not a general-circulation call; eligibility is defined by institutional affiliation, and submissions from outside that community are not under consideration. The journal publishes writing across fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and screenplays, and maintains a two-period reading cycle for its 2026–27 issue: one in Fall 2026 and one in Spring 2027. There is no submission fee. The guidelines are unusually specific, and they reward close reading. Within a single reading period, a writer may submit one to five poems, one to two short stories, one to two nonfiction pieces, or one to two plays or screenplays. Submitting across more than one genre is permitted, but each genre carries its own piece limit, and the journal asks that the cover letter state the genre of the submission plainly. Work accepted into the journal may be used for promotional purposes; contributors who wish to opt out of that use are asked to say so in the cover letter. The journal does not state a payment or prize in the materials provided. What the journal offers is publication within a community-college literary annual, with the editorial attention that a small, institutionally anchored magazine can provide. The curatorial posture is one of access and craft: the journal is reading for writing that is finished, self-aware, and submitted with an understanding of its own genre. There is no stated aesthetic doctrine, and none should be inferred. The relevant discipline is the writer's own—clarity of intention, command of form, and adherence to the stated limits.
