Abode Press — FEE WAIVED 2026 Chapbook Submissions for Black Writers

Overview
Abode Press operates from a specific institutional position: a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Central Texas whose stated commitments are intersectionality, anti-racism, anti-colonialism, and empathy. This is not a general-interest reading period. The press has designated this portal exclusively for Black-identifying writers, a curatorial decision that concentrates editorial attention rather than dispersing it. The reading period runs from August 15, 2025 to November 30, 2026, and there is no submission fee. The press publishes chapbooks in two categories: poetry, up to 30 pages, and hybrid work, up to 40 pages. Manuscripts should be set in Times New Roman or Garamond at 12 point, double spaced, and must include a cover sheet, acknowledgements, and table of contents. These front-matter pages do not count toward the page limit. Writers may submit one manuscript per genre per reading period. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, with the expectation that the press be notified immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. While Abode Press states a particular affinity for writers based in Texas and the American South, it explicitly encourages applications from across the United States. The press's focus on underrepresented voices is not a slogan but an operational criterion: this reading period exists to place Black writers' chapbook-length work into print through a nonprofit structure accountable to its stated values.
