Moonstone Arts Center — Fighting Fascism: Remembering the Abraham Lincoln Battalion

Overview
Moonstone Arts Center is assembling a magazine issue titled 'Fighting Fascism: Remembering the Abraham Lincoln Battalion,' timed to the 90th anniversary of the first 96 Americans who departed for Spain on December 26, 1936. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade comprised roughly 2,800 American volunteers who served in the International Brigades between 1936 and 1938, defending the Spanish Republic against Francisco Franco's fascist rebellion, which was backed by Hitler and Mussolini. The brigade drew students, workers, journalists, and intellectuals, and it fought as an integrated unit decades before the U.S. military desegregated, commanded for a time by Oliver Law, one of the first African American commanders of an integrated American military force. The issue will consider work across all disciplines and genres, inviting artists and writers to engage with this history and its enduring implications.
