New England Review — New Japanese Literature in Translation

Overview
New England Review is assembling a folio dedicated to new writing from Japan, presented in English translation and guest edited by Stephen Snyder and Allison Markin Powell. The call encompasses flash fiction, zuihitsu, short essays, and poetry—linked or otherwise—with a stated preference for authors whose work has not been widely published in translation. This orientation toward discovery rather than consolidation gives the folio a curatorial shape: it is not a survey of established voices but an opening for writing that has yet to circulate broadly in English. The parameters are precise. Prose may run up to 1,500 words; poetry submissions may include up to three poems. Work may be submitted by translators or by writers themselves. Translators are asked to first determine whether English-language rights are available for first serial U.S. and electronic publication. All submissions must affirm that the work is the author's own and not the product of artificial intelligence tools, software, or generators. There is no fee to submit. The deadline is Monday, November 30, 2026. Submissions should be sent as a single file, with prose double-spaced. While all formats are acceptable, those concerned about formatting are advised to submit accordingly. The folio represents a focused editorial project within a longstanding literary magazine, and the guest editors' involvement signals a considered, translation-specific reading of each submission.
