Free State Review — One Minute Play
Overview
Free State Review invites playwrights to submit up to three one-minute plays for consideration in forthcoming issues. The journal has a long-standing interest in the form, publishing a handful in each edition. The constraint is absolute: a single minute of stage time. This is not a prompt for truncated sketches but for complete dramatic actions that unfold within the span of a breath. The editors favor work that resists cinematic expansion—no elaborate sets, no backstory—and instead relies on the immediate presence of bodies on a stage. Plots without setup and characters without biographies are welcomed; the drama must be self-evident in the moment. The journal accepts previously performed one-minute plays, acknowledging the vibrant festival circuit that has grown around this form. Simultaneous submissions are permitted with notification. Upon acceptance, Free State Review acquires First North American Serial Rights and the right to publish the work on its website for up to six months following print publication. All rights revert to the author after printing, though the journal requests acknowledgment as the original publisher in subsequent reprints. There is a $3.50 fee to submit, a modest barrier that supports the journal's operations. The editors are explicit about their aesthetic: they want action, or its deliberate absence—inaction, inaction, inaction. The stage should be lightly furnished, the language lean, the stakes immediate. This is an opportunity for playwrights to distill their practice to its essence, to test whether a single minute can hold a world.
