Players Theatre Self Producing Artist Residency

Overview
The Players Theatre Self Producing Artist Residency is designed for creative teams who have moved beyond readings and festivals but require institutional support to mount a full production. The residency offers mentorship and a theatre subsidy, with the theatre consulting on production and assisting with marketing. In exchange, Players Theatre receives a split of the box office. This model acknowledges the financial and logistical hurdles that often prevent promising work from reaching New York audiences. The residency is not a commissioning program; artists remain responsible for all aspects of production, including hiring cast, stage manager, creative team, design, rehearsals, and marketing. The theatre's role is advisory and supportive, providing a physical venue and guidance while the creative team retains artistic control. This structure is suited to entrepreneurial artists who have a clear vision and the capacity to execute it. Proposals are evaluated on the strength of the play or musical, its development history, and the readiness of the creative team. The Players Theatre seeks projects that demonstrate artistic merit and feasibility for a New York run. There is no application fee, and the residency is open to original works in theatre.
