Green Linden Press — The Stephen Mitchell Prize (2026)

Overview
The Stephen Mitchell Prize for Excellence in Translation is conferred by Green Linden Press in recognition of a translator's capacity to carry a work across languages without loss of its essential music. Mitchell's own catalogue—Amichai, Homer, Neruda, Rilke, the Tao Te Ching, Gilgamesh, Genesis—establishes the standard: translation as an act of literary authorship, not merely linguistic transfer. The prize is open to any literary genre and any source language, provided the manuscript is rendered into English. The award carries a cash prize of $1,000 and publication. All finalists are considered for publication, and the press accepts simultaneous submissions, multiple submissions, and co-translated manuscripts. There is no entry fee. The manuscript must be unpublished and at least 48 pages in length. A cover letter with short biographical statements for both the author and the translator(s) is required, along with an acknowledgments page listing any translations previously published. The curatorial vision is one of discernment rather than volume: the press seeks manuscripts that demonstrate sustained attention to voice, register, and the particular pressures of the source text. The prize is not for excerpted work or single poems, but for a book-length translation that stands as a coherent literary achievement in English.
