Unleash Lit Submissions

Overview
Unleash Lit operates as the literary arm of Unleash Press, a platform committed to amplifying authentic storytellers across diverse communities. The journal maintains a rolling reading calendar—regular submissions open January 1 through June 30 and August 1 through November 30—and currently seeks ekphrastic work that responds directly to pieces it has already published. This is not a general call for new writing; it is an invitation to enter into conversation with the journal's existing archive, a curatorial gesture that positions the publication as a living, recursive space rather than a one-way conduit. The parameters are deliberately constrained. Prose submissions—fiction and creative nonfiction—may run up to 2,000 words, while poets and photographers may submit up to five poems or five images per submission. All poems may be gathered into a single document; multiple prose submissions are permitted but must be sent separately. The journal accepts new work, reprints, and simultaneous submissions, and it asks only that writers withdraw work promptly if they no longer wish it to be considered. There is no fee to submit. What distinguishes this opportunity is its emphasis on ekphrasis as a mode of community. By asking contributors to respond to specific published pieces—and to identify the publication date, title, and author of the work they are engaging—Unleash Lit fosters a dialogue between its contributors and its archive. The recent move to Substack signals an interest in closer readerly connection, and the ekphrastic call extends that logic: work that answers other work, in public, across issues.
