HerStry — Volunteer Reader Application
Overview
HerStry, a quarterly publication, invites applications for volunteer readers for the 2027 reading season. This is a service-oriented role within the literary ecosystem, offering direct engagement with the editorial process. Readers will evaluate submissions for one of four reading sessions: Winter (November–January), Spring (February–April), Summer (May–July), or Fall (August–October). The publication's Winter and Summer issues are themed, while Spring and Fall remain unthemed, providing a varied curatorial landscape. The opportunity is best understood as a form of editorial apprenticeship. While uncompensated, it affords readers a seat at the table where literary judgments are made, fostering a deeper understanding of what constitutes publishable work. The commitment is to a single session, allowing for focused participation without an indefinite obligation. This structure respects the reader's time while ensuring the journal benefits from fresh critical perspectives each season. HerStry's curatorial vision is implicit in its structure: a balance between thematic inquiry and open-ended exploration. Readers will encounter a breadth of submissions, from emerging voices to established writers, and will contribute to the collective discernment that shapes each issue. This is not a gatekeeping exercise but a collaborative one, where readers help identify work that resonates with HerStry's editorial sensibilities.
