About the organization

The Awesome Foundation is a global network of autonomous chapters that award $1,000 grants, known as 'micro-grants,' to projects that inspire awe and bring communities together. Founded in 2009 in Boston, it began as a simple experiment: a group of friends pooling money to support creative, unconventional ideas that might otherwise fall through the cracks. Since then, it has expanded to over 80 chapters worldwide, each operating independently but united by a shared ethos of grassroots, no-strings-attached support for projects that are often too small or too quirky for traditional funding. The foundation's mission is to democratize philanthropy by making grantmaking accessible, transparent, and fun, with a focus on ideas that have a tangible, positive impact on local communities.

Taking part

Applicants should first identify the local chapter that best fits their project's geographic or thematic focus, as each chapter has its own application timeline and review process. Proposals should be concise, vivid, and focused on the 'awesome' factor—what makes the project surprising, delightful, or community-building. Avoid jargon and lengthy business plans; instead, convey the idea's potential for immediate, tangible impact. Since grants are unrestricted and awarded monthly, applicants are encouraged to apply early and often, and to engage with chapter members at local events to understand their specific interests. Rejection is common due to high volume, so persistence and refinement of the pitch are key.
