About the organization

Black Public Media (BPM) is a national nonprofit media arts organization founded in 1979 as the National Black Programming Consortium. Its founding ethos emerged from a critical need to correct the historical absence of Black voices in public broadcasting and documentary film. BPM supports the development, production, and distribution of stories by and about Black people, with a particular focus on public media platforms. Over four decades, it has evolved into a key funder and advocate for Black independent filmmakers, offering grants, fellowships, and professional development. Its core mission is to ensure that Black perspectives are central to the American media landscape, not as an afterthought but as a foundational element of cultural democracy.

Black Public Media — BPM Open Call 2026

Taking part

Artists should approach BPM with a clear understanding of its public media focus. Projects should have a strong narrative arc, social relevance, and a feasible distribution plan for public broadcasting or educational outlets. BPM prioritizes work that authentically represents Black experiences and communities. Before applying, review past funded projects to align your proposal with their curatorial interests. The application process is competitive; a compelling work sample and a well-articulated audience engagement strategy are essential. BPM values projects that can demonstrate community impact and a thoughtful approach to storytelling. Deadlines are typically annual, so plan ahead and consider reaching out to program staff for guidance if your project fits their mission.
