About the organization

Cagibi is a literary and arts journal founded in 2015 by a collective of writers and artists in Brooklyn, New York. Named after the French word for a small, cluttered room, the journal embraces an eclectic, intimate aesthetic, publishing poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that often explores the margins of experience. Its founding ethos is rooted in the belief that literature and art should be accessible, diverse, and formally adventurous, providing a platform for both emerging and established voices. Each issue is organized around a theme—such as 'SKIN'—which serves as a loose provocation rather than a constraint, encouraging submissions that interpret the theme in surprising and personal ways.

Creative disciplines

Cagibi is invested in sharing the universal human experiences to be found in works of prose and poetry set within places unfamiliar to readers; thus, an expressed interest in international—or world—literature and works in translation. Cagibi is versatile in its purpose and mission to readers and writers. The journal concerns literature in which character conflict, ultimately story, is tied to place.

Before submitting, carefully read the current theme and several past issues to understand the journal's aesthetic range. Cagibi favors work that is emotionally resonant, formally polished, and willing to take risks; avoid overly generic or trend-driven pieces. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter that situates your work in relation to the theme, and adhere strictly to genre-specific guidelines (e.g., word limits, art file formats). Response times vary, so patience is advised; do not query before the stated reading period ends.
