About the organization

California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) was founded in 1961 by Walt and Roy Disney as a multidisciplinary institution dedicated to the professional training of artists in the visual, performing, and literary arts. Its founding ethos merged the Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, creating a unique environment where experimentation across disciplines is encouraged. CalArts is organized into six schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, and Theater. The Institute's mission emphasizes the development of each student's individual voice, fostering a community of artists who challenge conventions and contribute to the cultural landscape. Since its inception, CalArts has been a hub for avant-garde and innovative practices, with a curriculum that balances rigorous technique with conceptual exploration.

Application guidance

CalArts is primarily a degree-granting institution, so the main path for artists is through its competitive admissions process for BFA, MFA, and certificate programs. Each school has specific portfolio and application requirements, often including a artist statement, letters of recommendation, and a portfolio of work. Prospective students should demonstrate a strong individual vision and a willingness to engage in critical dialogue. For non-degree opportunities, CalArts occasionally offers residencies, workshops, and public programs; these are announced on the website and social media. Artists seeking to engage with CalArts should research faculty and current students to understand the institutional culture, which values experimentation, risk-taking, and interdisciplinary inquiry. It is advisable to attend information sessions or portfolio days to gain insight into the application process. Given the high volume of applicants, a clear, authentic, and well-crafted portfolio is essential.
