About the organization
The William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center, commonly known as the Edward F. Albee Foundation, was established in 1967 by playwright Edward Albee in memory of his partner, William Flanagan. Situated on a former horse farm in Montauk, New York, the foundation provides residencies to writers and visual artists during the summer months. Its founding ethos is one of quiet, focused support: artists are given space, time, and solitude to develop their work without the pressures of production or exhibition. The Center maintains a deliberately unadorned environment, where the primary expectation is that residents engage seriously with their practice.

Taking part
Applications are typically accepted in the winter for the following summer. The selection process is competitive but not bureaucratic: a committee of established artists reviews work samples and statements. Artists should submit a concise, honest account of what they intend to accomplish during the residency, avoiding grandiose language. The foundation looks for serious, self-directed practitioners who will make good use of the solitude. There is no application fee, and the residency is free of charge, though residents are responsible for their own travel and food. Given the limited number of spots, applicants are encouraged to apply early and to ensure their work samples are recent and representative.
