About the organization

DOC NYC was founded in 2010 by Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen with the aim of celebrating and elevating the art of documentary filmmaking. Based in New York City, it has grown into the largest documentary festival in the United States, presenting over 300 films annually each November. The festival's core mission is to connect audiences with non-fiction storytelling that illuminates the human experience, fosters empathy, and champions independent voices. It serves as a vital platform for both established and emerging filmmakers, offering premieres, retrospectives, and industry events.

Application guidance

DOC NYC accepts submissions year-round, with final deadlines typically in late summer for that year's festival. They prioritize films that demonstrate strong storytelling, original perspectives, and technical excellence. While the festival showcases a broad range of documentaries, they are particularly interested in works that push the boundaries of the form. Applicants should carefully review the submission guidelines on the website, including eligibility requirements and premiere status. Early submission is encouraged, as fees increase closer to the deadline. The festival also offers a range of industry programs, so filmmakers should consider how their project aligns with these opportunities.
