About the organization
Elk Rivers Writers is a literary organization rooted in the rural American West, dedicated to fostering serious creative writing through its annual Elk River Writers Workshop. Founded on the belief that place and community are vital to the writing life, the workshop offers generative space for poets, fiction writers, and nonfiction writers. While its institutional history is not widely documented, its sustained commitment to craft over careerism has earned it a quiet reputation among writers seeking depth over networking.

Applicants should approach the Elk River Writers Workshop with a manuscript that reflects genuine engagement with voice and place, as the selection process prioritizes authentic literary merit over publication credits. Given the workshop's small scale, it is advisable to submit early and ensure your writing sample is polished and representative of your best work. Demonstrated interest in the workshop's ethos—whether through a cover letter or prior participation in similar programs—can strengthen an application, but the primary criterion remains the quality of the writing itself.
