About the organization

The Forest of Reading is a Canadian children's choice book award program, founded in 1994 by the Ontario Library Association. Its core mission is to foster a love of reading in young people by inviting them to vote for their favourite books from annually curated lists. Unlike juried prizes, the Forest of Reading is a participatory program: thousands of students in schools and libraries across Canada read from nominated lists and select the winners, making it a unique celebration of reader agency and literary engagement.

Application guidance

The Forest of Reading does not accept direct submissions from authors or publishers. Titles are selected by committees of library professionals and educators based on annual reading lists. To be considered, a book must be published in Canada and meet the criteria for one of the program's age-specific lists (e.g., Blue Spruce, Silver Birch, Red Maple, White Pine). Publishers typically submit titles for consideration through the Ontario Library Association's nomination process. Authors and illustrators should consult the official website for deadlines and eligibility guidelines, and focus on creating high-quality Canadian children's literature that resonates with young readers.
