About the organization

Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, founded in 1998 in Durham, North Carolina, emerged from the conviction that documentary cinema deserves sustained, serious attention as both art and journalism. Originally launched as the DoubleTake Documentary Film Festival, it was reborn as Full Frame in 2002 under the stewardship of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. The festival’s core mission is to celebrate the documentary form in all its diversity—from vérité observation to essayistic experimentation—while fostering a community of makers and audiences who value nuance over spectacle. Over two decades, it has become a premier American showcase for non-fiction film, known for its curated slate and intimate, conversation-driven atmosphere.

Application guidance

Full Frame accepts submissions year-round, with final deadlines typically in late fall for the following spring edition. The festival prioritizes work that demonstrates a strong directorial vision and a thoughtful approach to non-fiction storytelling, whether short or feature length. Before submitting, watch previous Full Frame selections to understand the festival’s curatorial range—it favors films that are formally inventive and emotionally resonant, not merely issue-driven. Ensure your submission includes a compelling logline and a clear production history. If accepted, plan to attend: the festival’s Q&A sessions and informal gatherings are integral to its ethos, and filmmakers often find that the conversations here are as valuable as the screenings.
