About the organization

The Flanders Audiovisual Fund (Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds, VAF) was established in 2002 by the Flemish government to support and promote audiovisual production in Flanders. Its founding ethos is rooted in a commitment to artistic quality, cultural diversity, and the sustainable development of an independent audiovisual sector. VAF operates as a public funding body with a mandate to nurture emerging talent, encourage risk-taking, and strengthen the international presence of Flemish cinema and media arts. The fund provides grants across development, production, and distribution for fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental works, and also supports video games and digital culture projects.

Application guidance

Applicants should first review the specific funding lines and deadlines on the VAF website, as calls are periodic and category-specific. A strong application clearly articulates the project's artistic vision, feasibility, and intended audience, and demonstrates a thoughtful production plan and budget. VAF values projects that reflect a distinct authorial voice and cultural relevance. It is advisable to contact the relevant desk officer for guidance before submitting, and to ensure all required materials (treatment, financing plan, CVs) are complete and professionally presented. Note that VAF primarily funds projects with a Flemish connection, so international applicants should secure a Flemish co-producer or partner.
