About the organization

Hayden's Ferry Review (HFR) is a literary magazine founded in 1986 at Arizona State University. Named after the historic ferry crossing on the Salt River, the journal has long been a vital venue for emerging and established writers alike. Its mission is to publish compelling poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and translation that reflects a diversity of voices and aesthetics, with an emphasis on work that is both artistically rigorous and emotionally resonant. Over three decades, HFR has maintained a reputation for curatorial care, balancing the experimental with the accessible, and has become a fixture in the American literary landscape.

Application guidance

HFR accepts submissions via its online portal during reading periods, typically from September to May. Writers should submit polished work that demonstrates a strong command of language and a distinctive voice. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but notify immediately if accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, if any. The editors appreciate work that surprises, moves, or challenges, and they read blind, so remove identifying information from the manuscript. Response times vary, but generally range from two to six months. Familiarize yourself with recent issues to understand the journal's aesthetic range before submitting.
