About the organization

High Country News is a nonprofit news organization founded in 1970 to cover the American West—its public lands, natural resources, and communities. Based in Paonia, Colorado, it publishes an award-winning magazine and website, and its Books & Authors special issue, first launched in 2019, extends that mission to literary criticism and the region's writing culture. The issue features reviews, essays, and author interviews that examine Western literature through the lens of place, politics, and environmental change. While not a traditional arts funder, HCN provides a vital platform for writers and critics engaged with the West, and its call for pitches invites contributions that are reported, thoughtful, and rooted in the region's complexities.

Application guidance

Pitches for the Books & Authors special issue should be sent to the designated editor (check the website for current contact) and should clearly outline the proposed piece, its relevance to the West, and why it suits HCN's audience. Review the magazine's style and recent issues to ensure alignment. HCN typically seeks critical essays, author interviews, and reported features on literary themes; simultaneous submissions are generally discouraged. Payment varies, so inquire about rates upon acceptance. Response times can be slow due to high volume, so patience is advised.
