About the organization

The Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) was founded in 1977 as a non-competitive showcase for world cinema, making it one of Asia's longest-running film festivals. Established by the Urban Council and now organized by the HKIFF Society, a non-profit organization, it has grown into a major cultural event that presents over 200 films from more than 50 countries each spring. Its core mission is to foster appreciation of film as an art form, promote cultural exchange, and support the development of Hong Kong cinema by providing a platform for both established and emerging filmmakers.

Application guidance

HKIFF primarily curates its program through invitations and submissions. Filmmakers should check the official website for annual submission deadlines, typically in late fall. The festival favors works that demonstrate artistic merit, cultural significance, and innovative storytelling. While there is no strict thematic constraint, films that reflect the festival's history of championing Asian cinema and global art house fare are more likely to be considered. Ensure your submission includes a press kit, high-quality stills, and a clear synopsis. Early submission is advised, as competition is substantial.
