About the organization
IN SITU is a global network of organizations dedicated to producing and presenting art in public space. Founded in 2013 as a European platform, it has expanded to include members across continents, fostering a decentralized model of artistic production that prioritizes site-responsive and context-aware practices. The network's ethos is rooted in the belief that art in public space can catalyze social dialogue, challenge conventional exhibition formats, and engage diverse audiences beyond traditional art venues. By facilitating transnational collaborations, IN SITU supports artists in creating works that are deeply embedded in specific locales, often addressing local histories, ecologies, and communities. Its core mission is to enable the creation, circulation, and visibility of such works through co-productions, residencies, and public programs, while advocating for the critical and ethical dimensions of art in the public realm.

Taking part
Artists should first identify the IN SITU member organization in their region or the one most aligned with their practice, as proposals are typically evaluated at the local level. Each member issues its own calls, often with specific thematic or geographic foci. It is crucial to research past projects to understand the network's curatorial interests and production capacities. When approaching, articulate how your project engages with the specific context of the site and its communities, and demonstrate a clear understanding of the logistical and ethical considerations of working in public space. Building relationships with member curators through studio visits or participation in open calls is advisable, as IN SITU prioritizes long-term collaboration over one-off submissions.
