About the organization

Inside-Out Art Museum (IOAM) is a non-profit contemporary art museum located in Beijing, China. Founded in 2016 by a group of artists, curators, and scholars, it emerged from a desire to create a space for critical discourse and experimentation outside the commercial gallery system. The museum's name reflects its core ethos: to examine the intersections of art, society, and institutional frameworks, often turning its gaze inward to question its own structures and outward to engage with broader cultural and political contexts. IOAM operates as a platform for research-driven exhibitions, residencies, public programs, and publications, with a particular emphasis on process, dialogue, and the production of new knowledge. Its mission is to foster a reflective and rigorous environment where artists and thinkers can test ideas and challenge conventional narratives.

Taking part

Artists and researchers interested in IOAM's residency or exhibition programs should first familiarize themselves with the museum's curatorial themes and past projects, which often revolve around institutional critique, social practice, and cross-cultural exchange. Proposals should demonstrate a clear alignment with IOAM's ethos of process and inquiry, rather than focusing solely on finished products. The museum values projects that are context-sensitive and open to dialogue. Applications are typically accepted via periodic open calls; check the website for specific guidelines. It is advisable to articulate how your work engages with the museum's location in Beijing and its broader intellectual community. Due to limited resources, IOAM encourages early and thorough preparation, and applicants are advised to be concise yet substantive in their proposals.
