About the organization

The Iris Project Residency is an international, nomadic artist residency program founded in 2020 by curator and arts administrator Eleni Zaharopoulos. Conceived as a response to the increasing professionalization and commercialization of the residency model, Iris Project operates without a fixed physical site, instead partnering with host institutions and independent spaces worldwide to offer short-term, process-oriented residencies. Its core mission is to provide artists with unstructured time, critical feedback, and a supportive peer network, prioritizing experimentation over finished product. The program is deliberately small-scale, accepting only a handful of artists per cycle, and maintains a low profile within the residency circuit, favoring depth of engagement over visibility.

Taking part

Artists should approach Iris Project with a clear sense of their current research or open questions, rather than a polished portfolio. The selection committee prioritizes conceptual rigor, willingness to engage in collective critique, and a demonstrated interest in process over product. Applications typically require a project proposal that outlines a line of inquiry, not a fixed outcome, along with a concise artist statement and work samples that evidence experimentation. Given the program's nomadic nature, flexibility and adaptability are valued. There is no application fee, but deadlines are strict and late submissions are not considered. It is advisable to review past cohort themes and host partners to align your proposal with the program's ethos.
