About the organization

Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, situated in the Hudson Valley, was founded in 1990 by a collective of artists led by choreographer Kevin McKenzie and others, with the vision of providing a sanctuary where professional dancers and choreographers could develop new work away from urban pressures. Over three decades, it has evolved into a multidisciplinary residency center that supports dance, theater, music, and visual arts, emphasizing process over product. Its core mission is to offer time, space, and a supportive environment for artists to research, create, and present work, fostering a community that values experimentation and collaboration.

Kaatsbaan Cultural Park — September Weekend Retreat Residency

Taking part

Artists should approach Kaatsbaan with a clear sense of their creative goals for the residency period, emphasizing process and experimentation over finished product. Applications typically require a project proposal, work samples, and a statement of intent. It is advisable to research the specific residency program (e.g., September Weekend Retreat) to tailor the application to its structure and expectations. Demonstrating how the retreat's environment will benefit your practice and a willingness to engage with the community are valued.
