About the organization

Kids Take Over UBC is an annual family arts festival produced by UBC Inspired, the community engagement arm of the University of British Columbia. Founded to invite children and their families into the university's cultural and academic spaces, the program transforms campus venues—from the Museum of Anthropology to the Chan Centre—into sites of hands-on creativity and performance. Its core mission is to foster intergenerational learning through the arts, positioning children not as passive audiences but as active participants and creators. The festival emphasizes accessibility, curiosity, and the joy of discovery, offering a counterpoint to more formal arts education by prioritizing play and experimentation.

Application guidance

Artists and performers interested in participating should monitor the UBC Inspired website for annual calls, typically issued in the spring. Proposals should demonstrate a clear understanding of the festival's family-oriented, interactive format, with an emphasis on accessibility and hands-on engagement. Given the institutional context, projects that connect to UBC's research or collections are particularly welcome. There is no formal application fee, but selected participants are usually offered an honorarium. It is advisable to propose works that can accommodate large, fluctuating audiences and diverse age groups, and to articulate how the experience will empower young participants as co-creators.
