About the organization

The Kingston Prize is a biennial national portrait competition that was established in 2005 to celebrate contemporary portraiture in Canada. Founded by a group of artists and patrons, including the late artist and educator Ron Kingston, the prize aims to recognize excellence in portraiture across all visual media, from painting and drawing to sculpture, printmaking, and digital art. Its core mission is to foster a deeper appreciation for the portrait as a vital and evolving genre, reflecting the diversity of Canadian society and the human condition. The competition is open to artists living in Canada and Canadian citizens abroad, and it culminates in a touring exhibition that brings the selected works to audiences across the country.

Taking part

Artists should submit recent, original portrait works that demonstrate technical skill and a unique perspective on the genre. The competition accepts two-dimensional and three-dimensional works in various media, but digital or photographic reproductions of traditional media are not eligible. Ensure that the portrait is of a specific individual, not a generic figure, and that it was completed within the last two years. The entry process typically involves an online submission with digital images, followed by a physical exhibition for finalists. Pay close attention to deadlines and size restrictions, as works exceeding the specified dimensions may be disqualified. It is advisable to review past winners and exhibition catalogues to understand the range of accepted styles and approaches.
