About the organization

The Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University was established in 2006 as an interdisciplinary hub for the creation and study of the arts. Rooted in Princeton's longstanding commitment to the liberal arts, the Center brings together programs in creative writing, dance, theater, music theater, and visual arts, fostering a culture where experimentation and rigorous inquiry are paramount. Its founding ethos emphasizes the integration of artistic practice with academic scholarship, encouraging artists to engage deeply with both their craft and the broader intellectual community. The Center's mission is to support artists at all stages of their careers, providing residencies, fellowships, and public programs that enable creative risk-taking and meaningful exchange. Through initiatives like the Hodder Fellowship, the Center offers artists the time, space, and resources to develop new work without the pressure of immediate production, reflecting a commitment to process over product and to the sustained development of artistic vision.

Taking part

Artists should approach the Lewis Center with a clear sense of how their work aligns with its interdisciplinary and process-driven ethos. Applications for fellowships like the Hodder are highly competitive; a strong proposal will articulate a compelling creative project that benefits from the residency's resources and intellectual community. It is advisable to demonstrate awareness of the Center's programs and to present work that is both ambitious and thoughtfully contextualized. While there is no strict formula, successful applicants often show a trajectory of rigorous practice and a willingness to engage with the university's broader academic environment. Deadlines and requirements vary by program, so consult the website for specific guidelines.
