About the organization
The International Day of Light (IDL) is a global initiative led by UNESCO, celebrated annually on May 16th, commemorating the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by Theodore Maiman. It aims to raise awareness about the science and applications of light in fields such as medicine, communications, and energy, while also appreciating its role in art, culture, and education. The associated photo contest, organized by SPIE (the international society for optics and photonics), invites photographers worldwide to capture the essence of light in its many forms. The contest is part of a broader effort to engage the public and highlight the interplay between light and life.

Taking part
Artists and photographers should approach this contest with a clear concept that bridges light as a scientific phenomenon and as a creative medium. The jury, composed of scientists and photographers, values originality, technical skill, and the ability to communicate light's impact on our world. Submissions should adhere to the annual theme and technical requirements; past winners often feature innovative uses of light, shadow, and color. It is advisable to review previous winning entries to understand the expected standard. The contest is open globally, but entry fees may apply. Winning can offer significant exposure, but artists should also consider the contest's scientific orientation when tailoring their work.
