About the organization

Literary Arts, based in Portland, Oregon, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging readers, supporting writers, and inspiring the next generation with great literature. Since its founding in 1984, it has served as a vital hub for the literary community in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The organization is perhaps best known for producing the annual Portland Book Festival (formerly Wordstock), one of the largest literary events in the country, as well as for its Oregon Literary Fellowships, which provide unrestricted grants to Oregon writers at critical stages in their careers. Its mission is rooted in a belief that literature is essential to a vibrant, empathetic society, and it pursues this through a mix of public programs, youth education initiatives, and direct support for writers.

Application guidance

For the Oregon Literary Fellowships, applicants must be current Oregon residents and meet specific eligibility criteria, which are detailed in the annual guidelines. The application typically requires a writing sample, a project description, and a statement of need. It is advisable to carefully review the guidelines on the Literary Arts website and to submit well before the deadline. The selection process is highly competitive, so ensure your sample represents your strongest work. For exhibitor opportunities at the Portland Book Festival, priority is often given to independent booksellers, small presses, and literary organizations, but individual authors may also apply. Keep an eye on the website for call openings and prepare your materials in advance.
