About the organization

The Manhattan School of Music, founded in 1918 by pianist and philanthropist Janet Daniels Schenck, is a private conservatory located in New York City. Originally established as the Neighborhood Music School, it was conceived to provide rigorous musical training to students regardless of background, a mission that continues to inform its identity. Over the past century, MSM has evolved into a comprehensive conservatory offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in classical performance, jazz, musical theatre, and composition, with a faculty drawn from the ranks of the city’s major orchestras and ensembles. Its ethos balances a deep respect for the Western canon with a commitment to contemporary music and cross-genre exploration, all within the cultural density of Manhattan.

Application guidance

Prospective students should prepare a prescreening recording that demonstrates technical proficiency and musical expressiveness, adhering strictly to repertoire requirements for their instrument or voice. The application process includes an online form, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and an audition (live or recorded). For composition applicants, a portfolio of scores and recordings is essential. International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores unless exempt. Financial aid and scholarships are available based on merit and need; early application is advised. The admissions office encourages applicants to attend information sessions and campus tours to understand the conservatory’s expectations and culture.
