About the organization
The Merit Award is a bursary program dedicated to supporting emerging artists and writers at pivotal early stages of their careers. Founded on the belief that financial breathing room is often the most effective catalyst for creative risk-taking, the award provides unrestricted funds to individuals who demonstrate a rigorous, process-driven practice. Unlike project-based grants, the Merit Award prioritizes the artist's ongoing development over a single outcome, reflecting a trust in the long-term value of sustained inquiry.

Applicants should approach the Merit Award with a clear articulation of their practice as a whole, not a single project. The selection committee values evidence of sustained curiosity and a willingness to work without predetermined outcomes. Avoid over-polishing your application; instead, focus on conveying the questions that drive your work and how a bursary would create space for exploration. Deadlines are typically annual, and the application portal opens on a rolling basis—check the website for current cycles.
