About the organization

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) was founded in 1956 as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, with a mission to champion the intersection of craft, art, and design. Over its history, MAD has evolved into a dynamic institution that celebrates the creative process and the handmade, presenting exhibitions and programs that explore materials, techniques, and the boundaries of contemporary practice. Its Artist Studios program, launched in 2008, embeds artists within the museum, offering the public a window into the creative process and fostering dialogue between artists and visitors.

Taking part

Artists interested in the Artist Studios program should demonstrate a strong studio practice that engages with materials and process in innovative ways. The residency is open to artists working in a variety of media, including but not limited to ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and digital fabrication. Applications are reviewed by a committee, and selected artists are provided with a stipend and 24/7 access to a studio on the museum's sixth floor. The program requires a significant time commitment, including public engagement hours. Prospective applicants should articulate how their work aligns with MAD's mission and how they would interact with museum visitors. It is advisable to visit the museum and observe the current artists in residence to understand the program's expectations.
