About the organization

New American Paintings is a juried exhibition-in-print founded in 1993 by Steven Zevitas. Its core mission is to identify and promote emerging and mid-career American painters through a biannual publication that features the work of selected artists. Each issue is regionally focused, covering a specific geographic area of the United States, and is curated by a prominent juror—often a museum curator, critic, or established artist—who selects approximately 40 painters from a pool of applicants. The publication serves as a significant platform for artists seeking wider recognition, offering a tangible record of their work and a degree of validation from the contemporary art world. Over three decades, it has become a vital resource for collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts, providing a snapshot of current painting practices across the country.

Application guidance

Artists should carefully review the eligibility requirements and regional deadlines before applying. The competition is open to painters working in the United States; each issue covers a specific region, so applicants must apply during the window for their geographic area. The jury process is highly selective, with only about 40 artists chosen per issue from hundreds of entries. To strengthen a submission, present a cohesive body of recent work that demonstrates a clear artistic voice and technical proficiency. High-quality digital images are essential, as jurors review submissions online. Include a concise artist statement that contextualizes the work without over-explaining. While there is an entry fee, it supports the publication and selection process. Artists should also consider that being featured can lead to increased visibility, but it is not a guarantee of gallery representation or sales. It is advisable to apply multiple times if not initially selected, as persistence is common among successful applicants.
