About the organization
New Dance Alliance (NDA) is a New York-based artist service organization founded in 1986 by choreographer and curator Karen Bernard. Emerging from the downtown dance and performance scene, NDA was established to provide a platform for independent movement artists who often fall outside traditional presenting institutions. Its core mission is to support the creation, development, and presentation of new work through residencies, performance opportunities, and peer networks, with a particular emphasis on process over product and the sustainability of artists' practices.

Artists should approach NDA with a clear articulation of their creative process and a willingness to engage in a supportive, critical community. Proposals for residencies like Liftoff should demonstrate a need for time, space, and feedback rather than a finished product. It is advisable to research past projects to understand the aesthetic range and to apply during open call periods with a concise, honest work sample.
