About the organization

New Dramatists, founded in 1949 by Michaela O'Harra and a group of theater professionals, is the oldest playwright service organization in the United States. Its founding ethos was to provide a sanctuary where playwrights could develop their craft free from commercial pressures. Over seven decades, it has evolved into a unique residency program that offers seven-year terms to a select group of playwrights, granting them access to rehearsal space, developmental readings, and a community of peers. The core mission remains steadfast: to nurture the artistic growth of playwrights and to champion their work in the American theater.

Application guidance

New Dramatists does not accept open applications. Playwrights are nominated by theater professionals and selected through a rigorous internal process. To be considered, focus on building a body of work and gaining visibility in the field. Cultivate relationships with theaters, agents, and established playwrights who can nominate you. The organization looks for writers with a distinct voice and a commitment to the theater as an art form. While there is no direct submission path, engaging with the broader theatrical community and participating in developmental programs at other institutions can increase your chances of being noticed.
