One Teen Story Contest – One Story

About the organization

One Teen Story is a literary contest and publication arm of One Story, a nonprofit literary magazine founded in 2002 with the mission of promoting the short story form by publishing one story at a time. The One Teen Story Contest extends this ethos to young writers, inviting teens aged 13–19 to submit short fiction. Each year, the contest selects a single winning story, which is published as a standalone issue of One Teen Story and distributed to thousands of readers. The contest is rooted in the belief that young voices deserve a serious platform, and it emphasizes careful curation over volume, mirroring One Story's commitment to giving each story undivided attention.

Application guidance

Eligibility is limited to writers aged 13–19 at the time of submission. Stories must be original, unpublished, and between 2,000 and 4,000 words. The contest typically opens in the fall with a deadline in late winter; check the website for exact dates. There is a small reading fee, but fee waivers are available for those who need them. Submit via the online portal only. The judges look for strong voice, compelling characters, and a clear narrative arc—not necessarily experimental form. Proofread carefully; typos can distract. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but notify immediately if your story is accepted elsewhere. Winners receive publication, a modest honorarium, and ten copies of the issue. Finalists are often acknowledged on the website. Given the single-winner format, competition is steep, so polish your story and consider having a teacher or mentor review it before submitting.
