About the organization
Pro Helvetia is the Swiss Arts Council, established in 1939 with a mandate to promote Swiss cultural production both domestically and internationally. From its headquarters in Zurich and network of liaison offices in cities such as Cairo, Johannesburg, New Delhi, Shanghai, and São Paulo, it supports contemporary art, design, literature, music, theatre, dance, and interdisciplinary practices. Its founding ethos is rooted in cultural diplomacy and exchange, aiming to foster dialogue between Swiss and global artistic communities while reflecting the diversity of Switzerland’s four linguistic regions. Over the decades, it has evolved from a primarily export-oriented model to one that emphasizes reciprocal, process-driven collaborations and contextual sensitivity.

Taking part
Applicants should first identify the specific Pro Helvetia office or program relevant to their practice and geography, as guidelines vary by discipline and region. Proposals must demonstrate a clear rationale for Swiss-international exchange, a well-defined timeline, and a realistic budget. Avoid generic project descriptions; instead, articulate how the residency or grant will foster meaningful dialogue and mutual benefit. It is advisable to contact the respective liaison office before applying to clarify eligibility and expectations. Deadlines are typically annual or biannual, and competition is strong, so early preparation and precise documentation are essential.
