About the organization

RAIR (Recycled Artist in Residency) is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit organization founded in 2010 within Revolution Recovery, a construction and demolition waste recycling facility. Its founding ethos is to challenge conventional notions of waste and materiality by embedding artists in the daily operations of a recycling plant. The residency provides artists with unrestricted access to the waste stream as a source of materials, fostering practices that interrogate consumption, discard, and environmental impact. Core to RAIR's mission is facilitating dialogue between artistic production and industrial systems, encouraging work that is both materially inventive and critically engaged.

Taking part

Artists should approach RAIR with a clear interest in material exploration and a willingness to work within an active industrial environment. Proposals are strengthened by demonstrating how the residency would advance a specific line of inquiry related to waste, reuse, or systems of production. The selection committee values projects that are adaptable to the unpredictable flow of materials and that show sensitivity to the site's operational rhythms. Applicants are encouraged to visit RAIR's website and social media for current open call details and to articulate a realistic plan for their time, including safety considerations and potential outcomes. While there is no strict requirement for finished works, a thoughtful approach to documentation and public engagement is appreciated.
