About the organization

Sculpture by the Sea is a free public sculpture exhibition held annually on the coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama in Sydney, Australia, and in Cottesloe, Western Australia. Founded in 1997 by David Handley, the exhibition was conceived as a temporary outdoor gallery that would make contemporary sculpture accessible to a broad public while showcasing the work of Australian and international artists. Its core mission is to provide a platform for sculpture in the public realm, fostering a dialogue between art and the natural environment. Over two decades, it has grown into one of the world's largest free outdoor sculpture exhibitions, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Application guidance

Artists interested in exhibiting should regularly check the official website for annual call-for-entries announcements, typically open several months before each exhibition. Proposals should demonstrate a strong sensitivity to the coastal site, considering factors such as weather, tidal conditions, and public safety. Works must be durable, stable, and able to withstand outdoor exposure for the duration of the show. While there is no strict thematic requirement, successful entries often engage with the landscape, environmental themes, or interactive elements. A detailed maquette, technical drawings, and a clear installation plan are essential. Both Australian and international artists are encouraged to apply, though shipping and installation logistics should be carefully planned. The selection process is competitive, with a curatorial panel assessing artistic merit, originality, and feasibility.
