About the organization

The Sejong Cultural Society, founded in 2004, is a Chicago-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting Korean literature and culture, with a particular focus on the sijo, a traditional Korean poetic form. Its flagship initiative, the Sejong International Sijo Competition, invites poets worldwide to compose in this concise, three-line verse, encouraging cross-cultural engagement and literary experimentation. The Society's mission is to foster appreciation for Korean heritage through educational programs and competitions that bridge linguistic and cultural divides.

Application guidance

Poets should familiarize themselves with the sijo's structural conventions: three lines, each with 14-16 syllables, and a thematic twist in the final line. Submissions are accepted annually for the International Sijo Competition, typically via the website. Ensure adherence to guidelines regarding language (English or Korean) and originality. The Society values both traditional and innovative approaches, but technical precision is paramount. Review past winning entries to understand the expected caliber and style.
