About the organization

Serpentine Galleries, located in Kensington Gardens, London, was founded in 1970 as the Serpentine Gallery, initially housed in a former tea pavilion. Its founding ethos was to provide a free, accessible space for contemporary art, and it has since become a leading institution for contemporary art and architecture. In 2013, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery (now Serpentine North) opened in a renovated gunpowder store, expanding its footprint. The organization is known for its dynamic program of exhibitions, commissions, and public events, often focusing on emerging artists and interdisciplinary practices. Its mission is to champion contemporary art and ideas, fostering a dialogue between art, architecture, and society.
