About the organization

Socrates Sculpture Park was founded in 1986 by sculptor Mark di Suvero on a former landfill in Long Island City, Queens. Di Suvero and a coalition of artists and community members transformed the derelict waterfront site into a public studio and exhibition space, establishing a ethos of open access, artistic experimentation, and civic engagement. The park's core mission is to support the creation and presentation of large-scale sculpture and multi-disciplinary art in a public setting, fostering dialogue between artists and the surrounding community. It remains the only outdoor museum in New York City dedicated to contemporary sculpture and offers free year-round programming, including exhibitions, performances, and educational initiatives.

Taking part

Artists should approach Socrates Sculpture Park with a clear understanding of its public and community-oriented context. Proposals for the park's annual open call or other opportunities should demonstrate sensitivity to the site's waterfront environment, scale, and diverse audiences. While the park supports ambitious projects, it prioritizes work that is physically and conceptually accessible. Applicants are encouraged to visit the park, review past exhibitions, and consider how their work might engage with the local community. The park often seeks projects that are durable, safe, and able to withstand outdoor conditions. For specific submission guidelines, refer to the park's website and open calls.
