About the organization

The Dr. Marlene Trentwedel Foundation Prize, administered by the Stadt Bremervörde, is a biennial award dedicated to supporting contemporary visual artists. Established in 1998 through a bequest from the estate of Dr. Marlene Trentwedel, a physician and lifelong advocate for the arts, the prize reflects her conviction that artistic practice can serve as a vital form of civic and cultural inquiry. The foundation operates with a modest, focused mandate: to provide unrestricted funds and a solo exhibition at the Stadtmuseum Bremervörde to one emerging or mid-career artist each cycle. Its ethos is one of quiet, sustained commitment rather than spectacle, prioritizing the artist's working conditions over thematic constraints.

Taking part

Applications are accepted only during announced open calls, typically every two years. There is no entry fee, but the foundation expects a concise portfolio (max 10 images or 5 minutes of video), a brief artist statement, and a CV. Do not send original works. The jury favors coherent, research-driven practices over polished, market-ready series; evidence of ongoing experimentation is valued more than a flawless final product. Inquiries should be directed to the Kulturbüro Bremervörde via email, not by phone. Decisions are usually communicated within three months of the deadline.
