About the organization

Storyknife Writers Retreat, founded in 2016 by novelist Dana Stabenow, is a residency program dedicated to supporting women writers. Located in Homer, Alaska, it offers uninterrupted time and space for creative work in a supportive, communal environment. The retreat is inspired by the Alaska Native tradition of storyknifing, where girls would draw stories in the mud to share narratives, symbolizing the importance of women's voices and storytelling. The mission is to provide women writers with the opportunity to focus on their craft, free from the distractions and obligations of daily life, and to foster a community of writers who support one another.

Taking part

Applications are typically accepted annually, with deadlines announced on the website. Writers should submit a strong writing sample, a clear project proposal, and a statement of need. The selection committee values authenticity, a demonstrated commitment to writing, and a project that would benefit from the residency's unique environment. It is advisable to research the retreat's ethos and articulate how the time at Storyknife would advance your work. Ensure all materials are polished and adhere to guidelines, as the competition is growing.
